Professional features

  • Luciano Salio builds up himself as university professor and scientific researcher in the field of Industrial Design in the sixties and seventies.
  • With these skills Luciano Salio established four companies: STA Computer Graphics srl - SBP Computer Production srl - STA Group srl - STA R&D LabNet srl and the nonprofit Association ASTAD.
  • Since 28 years Luciano Salio heads important and continuous research and design tasks ordered to his companies concerning innovation in creative processes within Design&Engineering Centers of some renowned brands operating in the field of transportation design and related infrastructure. The goal is placing a methodological and technological framework of "simultaneous engineering" within Design&Engineering Centers for harmonizing new technologies with the needs of product development, aimed to shorten the time to market process. The Design&Engineering Centers commit to Luciano Salio education and training assignments for managers, engineers and designers in order to achieve innovation and give to his companies extended operational tasks to complement and support the internal structure on the path to new kinds of organization. Among other things, these activities produced permanent training sessions for top manager of product development and control.
  • Luciano Salio had the ability to detect very early some guidelines of the modern development. It's an example the industrial communication with videographics technologies in which he has been a pioneer since the late 70s and in which he acts as a researcher and author, director, designer of scenarios, environments and objects. Still today he applies innovative digital techniques to support the marketing activities of his client companies. As a producer of industrial movies, Luciano Salio wins prestigious prizes in national and international exhibitions. Many museums around the world (Tokyo, Mexico City, Montreal, Leningrad, Bordeaux, Paris, Rome) host these productions and many magazines wrote articles on STA's research and its new kind of expression and technology. In particular, in 1989 he won the Prix Italia (that is the prize for the best advertising of the year) and the Industrial Film Festival in Montreux in co-production with FIAT and RAI Radiotelevisione italiana (the state TV broadcaster). Luciano Salio is author and producer of all the movies in computer graphics related to the presentation of the Fiat Group's concept-car for international motor shows. It's also author and producer of interactive installations for great events commissioned by institutions and international brands.

1. CHRONOLOGY OF HIS MAIN ACTIVITIES

From 1962 to 1970 he has been working as a student architect at a large architectural design firm of Turin (ing. Bizzarri) where he designed many industrial, public and residential buildings. Later he practiced his own professional activity as architect.

From 1970 to 1974 he won two permanent teaching assignments of Design in high school.

From 1974 to 1998 he has been teaching and researching at the Faculty of Architecture of Turin Polytechnic - Institute of Technology for the built environment and Department of Science and techniques for the settlement processes.

The academic activities of Luciano Salio is mainly aimed at the field of Industrial Design. For 16 years he was close assistant to the famous top-designer and architect Achille Castiglioni (courses of Artistic Design for Industry and Interior Design) and collaborates with the most famous Italian designers located in Milan to define the paradigm of Industrial Design and to strengthen this discipline in universities and industries. Following he is professor in the fields of Design Methodology, Corporate Communication and Corporate Organization.

He also develops many insights for the following teaching subjects and courses: Technology for Architecture, Unification and Prefabrication for Building, Architectural Design.

It's remarkable the contribution of Luciano Salio to the theoretical problematic of standardization in industry aimed at both the product and the process, as a member of UNI (National Agency for Standardization), ISO and SIE (Italian Society of Ergonomics).

In 1987 he established STA s.s. company in Turin, the first facility of computer graphics and computer animation in Italy addressed to Industrial Design with the aim of developing virtual simulation techniques for process and product, at that time completely unknown. Luciano Salio gives to this new company the experience gained in the field of scenic design for TV and movies. He takes over the leadership, the scientific responsibility for software development and the creative responsibility for production.

In 1987 he established SBP Computer Production srl - a Turin branch of SBP spa of Rome (at that time the largest company of television production and post-production in Europe) with the goal of creating a cutting-edge group for virtual processing in the field of industrial television, aimed at marketing and product development. Luciano Salio takes the managing commitment of chairman and art director.

In 1991 he established STA Group srl - a service company of average size (90 employees) to support multinational companies in the field of research on process and product and co-design of complex objects in the transportation design area. Luciano Salio takes the managing commitment of president, research director and art director. 

In 2001 he established STA R&D LABNET srl in Cosenza - a company for training, research and development in the field of engineering, remote collaborative work and virtual evaluation, aimed at the product's setting stages of multinational companies. Luciano Salio takes the managing commitment of president, director of research, software development and training.

In 2008 he established ASTAD to which he transfers training activities of STA.  
ASTAD - "STA Association for design" - is a nonprofit organization officially recognized by Piedmont Region (Italy). 
ASTAD's mission is: - integrating different international cultures in the field of design through the joint training of young entrepreneurs, managers and design professionals - supporting the establishment of new joint ventures that are able to bring to market new products and services.
Astad develops this experience with qualified foreign entities in particular from Eastern countries: universities, institutions and companies.

Inside Astad Luciano Salio performed most of his favorite design topics listed above. It should be noted the annual Master established and fully funded by the Korean Government, Ministry of Productive Activities, entitled "The professional skills of Chief Designer". It was dedicated to 55 designers (graduates, young professionals and entrepreneurs). The Master has been centered on the job profile of a designer addressed to become the head of a Style Centre with at least 50 employees, placed in a large corporate structure, within a Creative Department and in direct contact with Briefing and Engineering Departments.

Full support to customers 
Creative and engineering tasks in the field of design: STA's staff has been trained and organized to support the customer at all stages of design development of a complex product, from setting studies to the Style master, through the steps of style research. This has enabled the company to participate in the realization of over 300 car models and means of transport of various nature, today almost all produced and circulating. The need for highly qualified staff has led STA to establish an internal school where future employees are trained in a systematic way (this school has generated much of designer and virtual designer of the Turin area).

Marketing Vision
Consulting tasks in the field of Marketing: by nature and vocation, STA developed a specific Marketing Vision and applied it to cases of customers. We mention research on brand design, brand identity, product briefs. Is to be noted the collaboration on the realization of 9 concept car of Fiat group. These prototypes, whose mission is to advance philosophy and technologies of future cars, saw STA engaged in: drafting conceptual briefing, drafting technical briefing, design of exteriors, interiors and technological equipment, communication to press and public, always in co-design with the customer.
